Who Did Lord Krishna Marry First?

When we speak of Lord Krishna, we often speak of his flute, his leela, and his eternal bond with Radha. But when it comes to marriage, the first name that emerges in the sacred texts is Rukmini—a goddess in her own right, and Krishna’s principal queen.

Their union is not just a royal tale of love and valor; it is a deeply symbolic marriage between the Supreme Consciousness (Krishna) and the Divine Devotion (Rukmini).

Who Was Rukmini?

Rukmini is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. She was the princess of Vidarbha and was renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and unwavering devotion to Krishna—even before meeting him.

She had heard tales of his divine play in Vrindavan, his role in defeating demons, and his dharma as a king. While many suitors sought her hand, including the powerful yet arrogant Shishupala, her heart belonged only to Krishna.

Rukmini’s Letter to Krishna

Fearing a forced marriage to Shishupala, Rukmini sent a heartfelt message to Krishna through a trusted Brahmin messenger. Her words were not just romantic—they were a cry of surrender and divine love. She wrote:

“O Lord of all beings… take me as your wife. My heart has chosen you, and only you."
Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10

The Daring Abduction and Marriage

Krishna arrived in Vidarbha on a chariot and abducted Rukmini from the temple where she was praying, just before the planned wedding. This divine elopement, filled with courage and spiritual symbolism, is one of the most celebrated events in Krishna’s life.

Their marriage took place in Dwaraka, marking Rukmini as his first and principal queen, among the eight main consorts (Ashtabharya).

Symbolism of the Divine Union

  • Rukmini represents Shraddha (faith) and Bhakti (devotion).

  • Krishna represents Paramatma (the Supreme Soul).

Their marriage is not merely a worldly affair—it symbolises the soul’s longing and union with the divine.

Honouring Rukmini and Krishna Today

Devotees worship Rukmini and Krishna together in many temples across India, especially in Dwarkadhish Temple (Gujarat) and Rukmini Devi Temple in Dwarka.

Wearing jewellery featuring Krishna or Radha-Krishna motifs is also a devotional way to stay connected to their divine love story.
